The First Christian Church in Whitesboro, Texas is a beautiful old brick church recently renovated and repurposed into a wedding and event center.
First Christian Church in Whitesboro, Texas – History
The church was built in 1906 and was eventually sold. It sat for years being ignored and quickly showing it age. Renovations began in 2013. There was a for sale sign up on the front building for a little while. Back in 2020 when I visited the church the sign was still up. I’m not sure if the same owners eventually the chapel setup or if someone else purchased the building and completed the project.
The only history I could find online is from the The 1906 Venue website. That mostly covers the important renovations of the church. If you know anything about the early of the church please contact me or comment below.
Renovations – Information Found on the “Our Story Page”
In 2013 renovation began with plans for the detailed restoration of its historic features. The new owner’s vision for the church was to restore the important historic architectural details but have modern details added to the design.
As with many old churches and buildings, the windows were broken and boarded up. Sadly the windows were stained glass making the damages even worse. The owners were able to find the original 1906 glass fabricator. They were able to create, match, and replace the damaged areas of the stained glass.
The old ceiling tiles that are common with churches and other buildings from this era were made of pressed tin. The ones in the church were damaged. The owners were able to find the original manufacturer. W.F. Norman Company, the original makers of the tin ceiling tiles still had the original molds. They were able to make matching replicas and were used to replace the damaged ones.
The Union Lounge, which is located in the lower level basement was reconfigured into two large bridge rooms, additional restrooms, gathering space, and a catering staging area.
The First Christian Church in Whitesboro, Texas is completely renovated and restored. It’s a privately owned wedding and event venue called The 1906 Wedding & Event Venue. The chapel combines that historic chapel charm that many brides and grooms want but with the modern amenities of present days venues.
