Whenever I have free time and do my rural exploring I like to explore the downtown area of Smalltown America. These parts of town have a ton of history and character in these old buildings that you don’t get in modern buildings. A lot of the history may not be considered important but it’s still history being lost when these buildings come down and their stories aren’t saved. One of my favorite little towns to explore is Denison, Texas. They are still considered a small town but are growing fast. Many of their main street buildings are preserved or repurposed the buildings along the outskirts of downtown are not. During one of my trips, I came across the Old P. J. Mullens Building. It is an old 2 story brick building that has been used for a variety of purposes over the last 100+ years.
The Old P. J. Mullens Building – History
The P. J. Mullens Building was built in 1905. Originally was Mullens Grocery, then another family took over the grocery store.
According to one source, after the second grocery store closed the building held a variety of businesses over the years. The last business was a motorcycle shop. I believe it was a Harley Shop. There is still some evidence of the shop on the main floor.
Today the building looks to be vacant or waiting for the new owners to do their thing with it.
